Bank Account Compromise
Guidance for clients who suspect unauthorised access to their bank accounts, credit cards, or online payment services. Speed is critical to prevent financial loss. The steps below align with ACSC recommendations.
This is generic advice. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your financial institution's fraud department.
Stop Further Loss
Call Your Bank Immediately
Do not wait. Call your bank using the number on the back of your card or their official website. Tell them you suspect fraud. They can freeze your accounts and stop pending transactions.
Change Your Banking Password
Log in (from a secure device) and change your password immediately. Ensure it is unique and strong. If you cannot log in, tell the bank this when you call.
Be Alert for Recovery Scams
Criminals often target victims of fraud with "recovery" scams, pretending to be the bank offering to help get money back. Never transfer money to a "safe account" or give remote access to your device.
Secure Your Accounts
Check Other Financial Accounts
If you used the same password elsewhere (e.g., PayPal, Afterpay, other banks), change those passwords immediately.
Secure Your Device
If you suspect your computer or phone was hacked (malware), do not use it for banking until it has been cleaned or reset. Run a full antivirus scan.
Review Statements
Go through your transaction history carefully. Report any unauthorised transactions, no matter how small, to your bank immediately.
